Self-Defense Weapons for Your Protection
By Charles Bernardi

We live in a very violent society where the safety of an individual is threatened in many situations by other people. Assaults can occur in many places at many times. If we are not to be left feeling like powerless victims, what can we do to protect ourselves against such often surprising attacks? Well, taking the life of someone else is not really acceptable in society for an ordinary person on the street. There are however alternatives to both taking the life others and using firearms when you need to protect yourself against attacker, these are self-defense weapons.

There are many self-defense products available that you can use to protect yourself without putting the life of your attacker in danger. Below is an overview of the various self-defense products available.

Stun guns and Batons

An increasingly popular type of self-defense weapon is the stun gun. Stun guns are extremely useful when the aggressors are already too close for you to run or get away. A Stun Gun is an electrical defense weapon that uses high voltage to stop an attacker. An attacker can be easily immobilized by touching the person with the prongs of the gun. Because the amperage is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted. You can choose stun guns with varying sizes and voltages. Stun guns can be disguised as soda cans, mobile phones, credit cards, cigars, flashlights and other objects you usually carry around. If you need extra reach length you can use a stun baton. You will have enough time to leave the area or even call the police while your attacker is paralyzed by muscle spasms.

It is important to check whether buying or carrying and using stun guns is legal in your state and/or country.

Pepper Sprays (Oleoresin Capsicum)

The most common self-defense weapon is the pepper spray. It s cheap, small and inflicts enough pain to take the attackers mind off of you. You can buy pepper spray in the classic tube form. Also like the stun gun it can be camouflaged in usual objects that you carry around on a daily basis, lipstick being an example. Pepper sprays are by far the most popular weapons used today. Remember however that police using pepper spray are given extensive training on how to use it effectively. Some conditions minimize its effects, for example if used on a windy day or if it is miss-aimed.

Tasers

The new Advanced Taser M-18 series has almost 100% effectiveness rating. It is said to combine injury reducing benefits of the traditional stun gun with a quantum leap in stopping power via new Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology. Studies have shown that the new Advanced Taser has a higher instant incapacitation rate than a 9mm hand gun. The Advanced Taser shoots out 2 darts attached to 15 feet of wire and 50,000 volts travels over the wires to over-ride the central nervous system. This provides substantial power to immobilize the attacker.

Airsoft Guns

Airsoft guns are generally used for practice and/or fun. Whilst it is not recommended that Airsoft Guns are used as self-defense weapons in a real-life situation they a great resource for training improving alertness and speed of response to aggressive situations.

Self-defense products are a way of protecting yourself and your family without resorting to taking somebody s life. Ensure that when you purchase any self-defense products you learn how to use them effectively, you are familiar with the legal aspects of their purchase and use and that the supplier is a reputable company with a history of providing good quality products.

Fire Safety Around the Holidays
By Leo Nov

In our previous article we discussed the safety issues associated with your Christmas tree. This article will follow up with some key safety tips you can use to reduce fire hazards that holiday lights and decorations present.

Light Safety

It is important to always use lights that have been approved by a testing laboratory when decorating your tree or home. You should also review the manufacturer s instructions on how to use tree lights properly and safely. During each holiday season, inspect for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before installing lights.

Be mindful that some lights are specifically manufactured for indoor or outdoor use, rather than both. When using outdoor lights, make sure you store them inside after the holidays to prevent hazard and to help extend the lifespan of the lights.

Avoid Electricity Fires

Be cautious not to overload any of your electrical outlets. Unless the manufacturer s instructions say otherwise, only connect up to three light strands. It s recommended that you connect strands of lights to an extension cord prior to plugging the cord into the outlet. This will allow you to light everything at the same time. Test the wires twice a day by feeling them to verify that they are not too hot and never leave holiday lights on when you leave your home for the day or night.

Decorating

While decorating your tree, be sure to use flame-retardant or non-flammable decorations. Do not use real lit candles to decorate your tree, and make sure any lit candles in the room are at least three feet away from the tree branches.

Smoke Alarms

Christmas trees increase the chances of fire damage in the home. That is why the holiday season is an important time to check, test, and service your smoke alarms and detectors. Every level of your home, especially above your tree, should have working smoke alarms installed.

Tree Disposal

When your Christmas tree turns dry and begins losing needles, discard of it quickly.
